Men’s health
There are many important ways acupuncture and herbal medicine can benefit men’s health. They can play a role in the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors, improve sleep, reduce stress, and eliminate pain. They can also help maximize fertility for those wanting to be fathers.
Many men seek treatment for injuries, to relieve muscle tightness & pain, or address musculo-skeletal imbalances. Acupuncture can help improve athletic performance for men of all levels of fitness.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is used to stimulate acupoints. An acupoint is a specific and discrete place on the skin’s surface that can be stimulated by various means to create change.
An easy way to understand how this works is to use the analogy of an electrical circuit that connects a light switch with the light. Imagine a dimmer switch used to make the light brighter or darker by regulating the amount of energy moving through the circuit. Acupoint stimulation is about regulating the flow of energy (Qi) across a circuit (a channel or meridian) using a switch (the place where stimulation occurs). Like a dimmer switch, we can stimulate an acupoint to increase or decrease the amount of energy in a given circuit. We achieve this in many different ways: with needles (acupuncture), finger pressure (acupressure), temperature, magnets, essential oils, and more.
The acupuncturist’s goal is to apply appropriate stimulus at the correct point to increase or decrease the Qi (energy) moving across a meridian (circuit) in the body to bring about a state of balance.
Herbal Medicine
The Chinese herbal formulary has been developed and refined for thousands of years and has been used to treat all health conditions from which people suffer. Herbs play an essential role in unwinding the complex health conditions many people experience today. Herbal medicine provides a safe and effective complementary or alternative approach to conventional drug-based therapy.
We utilize both traditional and modern approaches when choosing herbal formulas for our patients. We work exclusively with herb suppliers that insist on the cultivation and processing of safe, effective, and sustainable herbs.
Cupping
Cupping involves placing glass, silicone, or plastic cups on the body’s surface using suction. Cups are either left in place or moved over broader areas. Cupping is used to improve circulation to the area that cups are applied. The treatment can help reduce muscle tension and inflammation, promote cell repair, and reduce pain. It may also help in the regeneration of new connective tissue and blood vessels. Cupping has recently become a very popular treatment modality; physical therapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists have all discovered what acupuncturists have known for thousands of years.
Gua Sha
Gua Sha is a technique where a smooth and rounded-edged instrument is used to stroke and place pressure on the skin, creating redness that increases circulation, eases pain, and improves range of motion.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” are heated on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi (energy) in the body and to release pathogenic influences. Moxa is traditionally made from the dried leafy material of mugwort (Artemesia Argyi or Artemesia Vulgaris).
Diet & Lifestyle Recommendations
Diet and lifestyle choices are critical factors in establishing and maintaining a strong foundation for vibrant health. The choices that we make in these areas directly and immediately impact our body’s ability to create balance. We strongly encourage every patient with recommendations and encouragement in these areas as needed during their treatment.
